Shrek the Third and Dreamworks

Posted on: cnn.com

CNN.com has an article about the financial aspects of Dreamworks, with a heavy emphasis on their animated movies including the Shrek franchise.

When Shrek the Third premieres this weekend, Dreamworks will take in more money at the box office than any weekend since 2004 when Shrek 2 was released. This may be cause for concern for Dreamworks as none of their 4 animated titles since Shrek 2 has had nearly the success as the Shrek series has. Madagascar has come the closest, taking in $193.6 million in US Box Office sales. Trailing way behind is Flushed Away, which only brought in $64.5 million. Later this year, Dreamworks will release the animated Bee Movie, written by Jerry Seinfeld.

The article goes on to mention that Dreamworks would like to get into the cycle of releasing 2 animated films per year, with one being a sequel and one being an original. In order to succeed with that plan, they will need more franchises than Shrek. Madagascar is a possibility, with a second film in the works for 2008. Franchise films are great for the studio because they can bring multiple revenue streams in long after the movies are out of theatres, with DVD sales and other merchandise, something that has helped Dreamworks in the past.

Analysts are expecting Shrek the Third to take in $750 million in worldwide Box Office sales. The original Shrek took in $470 million, with Shrek 2 doing $886 million. While Dreamworks would be happy with $750 million for Shrek the Third, what they would really love would be to build another franchise as popular as the Shrek franchise. Whether that is Madagascar, or Bee Movie, or next summer's Kung Fu Panda remains to be seen. It will be fun to watch, though.
