Shrek the Third breaks Box Office record

Posted on: cnn.com

Shrek the Third opened this weekend with an estimated $122 million in US Box Office sales, breaking the record for best debut ever for an animated film. The previous record of $108 million was set by none other than Shrek 2, in 2004.

The opening was the third largest debut ever, with only Spider Man 3 at $151.1 million and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest at $135.6 million ahead of it.

Dreamworks and Paramount executives, and most box office analysts, were expecting Shrek the Third to open in roughly the same range as Shrek 2, between $100-110 million. "The opening was significantly beyond our expectations," said Anne Globe, head of marketing for DreamWorks Animation.

Shrek the Third will more than likely have a short life at the top of the box office, with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End coming out next Friday. Analysts are giving the new Pirates movie a chance at breaking the all time debut record, currently held by Spider Man 3.

Now it will be fun to see how close Shrek the Third can come to the Box Office revenue of Shrek 2, which is currently the third highest grossing movie in the US, at $436.5 million.
