Shrek the Third falls to number 2 at the Box Office

Posted on: cnn.com

Shred the Third could not keep up with the mighty Pirates of the Caribbean, as the latest movie in Disney's franchise led the box office this Memorial Day weekend with $142.1 million, a record for best Memorial Day weekend debut ever. Shrek the Third fell to number 2 with a respectable $69.1 million, bringing its domestic total up to $219.4 million.

After the same number of days in release for Shrek 2, it had only made $212.1 million. That comparison is a little unfair, however, since Shrek 2 was released on a Wednesday while Shrek the Third was released on a Friday. Therefore, after 11 days of release, Shrek the Third already has 2 full weekends worth of revenue, while Shrek 2 only had 1 full weekend worth of revenue. If you take in to account the remainder of Shrek 2's Memorial Day Weekend, it was at $260.3 million after 13 days while Shrek the Third will probably only be around $231 million, assuming about $6 million each for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Shrek 2 went on to become the the highest domestic grossing animated film in history at $436.5 million, and the third highest domestic grossing film ever. Whether or not Shrek the Third has that kind of staying power, we'll just have to wait and watch.
